Meaning ‘eternity’ in Dutch, Chikan Tower is recognised as one of Taiwan’s major tourist attractions. Identified as Provintia during the early years, the tower was constructed in 1653 by the Dutch. However it was renamed as ‘the tower of savages’ or ‘tower of the red haired Barbarians’ by the Han Chinese.
Chikan Tower has been a significant administration centre of Tainan ever since the Dutch invaded the country and even though the tower has been through various Chinese rules such as the Ching and Ming Dynasties and Japanese Colonisation Period it has not experienced any major alterations. Therefore, many of its original architectural features can be witnessed even today which makes it a sought after tourist attraction in the region. This iconic site is hugely popular for its spectacular appearance by night. It is said that ‘The sunset in Chikan Tower’ is among Taiwan’s eight best and most famous scenic views. When the Dutch were repelled in 1661 by the famous Chinese general, Cheng Chengkung Chikan Tower was made the mansion of the Chentien governor.
One of the most impressive features at the site is the nine stone structures of turtles carrying plates. It is believed that these structures were created elsewhere during the Ching Dynasty and was later moved to the site of the Chikan Tower. The stone structure of a horse with broken legs is also a famous attraction here.
However with time this remarkable Taiwanese icon decreased in popularity and was damaged due to civilian turmoil and lack of appropriate administration. During the Japanese colonisation period, it was used as a hospital for the army and later became popular for hosting the worship for Guanshihyin Budda.
Chikan Tower remains to be one of the most visited tourist attractions in Tainan due to its cultural, architectural and historical importance. Exploring this fascinating Taiwanese landmark is made much more convenient by nearby hotels in Tainan such as Shangri-La's Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Tainan that offers unrivalled services to ensure a comfortable and memorable stay.
