Exploring Sydney
Sydney Opera House

Housed in an iconic building, the famed Sydney Opera House is a contemporary performing arts centre with a number of different venues. It is Australia’s most well known and state of the art building positioned perfectly on Bennelong Point in Sydney.

Recognised as one of the world’s most impressive architectural wonders of the 20th century, the Sydney Opera House is also now a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was listed so, predominantly due to its cultural and architectural significance. The groundbreaking design of the opera house blossomed following a pervasive international competition which was won by the renowned Danish architect Joern Utzon in 1956.

This distinctive 20th century masterpiece is situated in close proximity to the Sydney Harbour Bridge.  The building features two key venues, namely the Opera Theatre and the Concert Hall.  Since the Opera House opened in 1973, the first major external amendment came in way with the addition of the Colonnade in 2006.  The Reception Hall was significantly refurbished by Utzon and was notable for its outstanding acoustics. Following the renovation, the Reception Hall was named Utzon Room in 2004 in honour and respect of the great architect.

Visitors who wish to explore the phenomenal Sydney Opera House can choose from various guided tours such as The Essential Tour, Asian Spotlight Tour and even the Backstage Tour. The Opera House is also an unmatched place when it comes to dining and tasting delectable Australian food amidst stunning ambience.   It houses restaurants and cafes like the Guillaume at Bennelong, Opera Bar, Sidewalk Café, Bistro Mozart and Theatre Bars. Sydney Opera House Shop, Purely Australian Clothing Co, Barrington's and Sydney Opera House Market are ideal for those who wish to enjoy some shopping.

Managed by the Sydney Opera House Trust, this world class performing arts centre is at present one of Australia’s major tourist attractions.  Staying at a hotel near Sydney Opera House such as Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney will make the visit to this unrivalled tourist attraction much more exciting and memorable.
