Exploring Sydney
Sydney Harbour BridgeIt is an imposing steel arch bridge which is affectionately nicknamed by locals as ‘The Coathanger’.  Better known as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, it is one of the most distinguished landmarks of Australia and runs across one the world’s most spectacular harbours.

Occupying a significant position in the heart of the city, the Sydney Harbour Bridge was first opened for traffic in March 1932. Acclaimed as the biggest steel-arch Bridge in the world, it connects the Sydney CBD or Sydney Central Business District and the North Shore of the harbour. The bridge is known to offer dramatic, breathtaking iconic views of Australia and its famed harbour and the nearby Sydney Opera House.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge takes the fifth slot in the world’s longest spanning arch bridge. This fascinating steel arch bridge is also the world’s tallest, measuring an astounding 134 metres from its peak to water level.  The bridge was the brainchild of Dr John Job Crew Bradfield who is known even today as the ‘Father of the Bridge’.  It is recorded that nearly one million people gathered to witness its opening back then in 1932.  Today, the bridge is not merely a remarkable site to see since it provides convenient access for those getting around the city.  It boasts of eight vehicle lanes, two train lines, and a footway for pedestrian access as well as a cycleway.

Bridge Climb at the Sydney Harbour Bridge has become a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can enjoy tours that take place throughout the day and even in the night. Protective gears and clothing as well as special orientations are provided for daring climbers.   For many years the bridge has also been the focal point for important national celebrations and fireworks display on New Year’s Eve.

Staying in a hotel near Sydney Harbour Bridge such as Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney provides convenient access to this bridge of immense national pride and the chance to discover the beauty of an enormously picturesque city.
