Garden of the Master of the Nets

Although small in size, Garden of the Master of the Nets is the most charming, impressive and serene gardens in Suzhou making it the perfect case in point that size does not really matter.

Occupying a total land area of merely 5000 square metres, Garden of the Master of the Nets features each and every aspect of a typical Chinese garden. Famed as the smallest residential garden in the city, it is also listed as a United Nations World Heritage site. The most fascinating feature of the garden is how the limited space has been skilfully utilised.  Apart from the architectural achievement, the garden is much popular for its quiet and peaceful ambience.

The intimate Garden of the Master of the Nets boasts a long and prestigious history. It was initially built in 1140 during the Song Dynasty but was neglected until 1770 when it was renovated to its present style.

This appealing residential garden is separated in to three main sections which are the central main garden, inner garden and the residential section. The main garden consists of a large yet graceful pond which is surrounded by the remarkable Ribbon Washing Pavilion as well as the Pavilion for the advent of the Moon and Wind. Furthermore, the pond has a small Pavilion which is accessible by a beautiful bridge.

Garden of the Master of the Nets is perfect for those seeking to experience a moment of peace amidst stunning natural beauty. The garden and its many walkways are well maintained and are complete with beautiful flowers and plants. The designs, architectural styles and ornamentation that are visible here embody the style of the famed Song Dynasty.

Garden of the Master of the Nets is renowned as the most well-preserved garden in the region.  Today it has also become one of the must see tourist attractions in Suzhou. Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou is a luxury hotel ideally positioned offering easy access to this spectacular garden as well as many others in the city.
