Exploring Shenyang
Imperial Mausoleum

Regarded as the regal, final resting place of Qing royalty, the Imperial Mausoleum in Shenyang provide a glimpse of the grandeur of a bygone era.  The tombs found in Shenyang are two out of four tombs built for the Qing Dynasty.  The Zhaoling Tomb is considered the finest sight in Shenyang while the Fuling Tomb is set amidst a lush forest giving it an astounding aura.

Built in the 17th century the tombs display the mastery of the workers through the grandly decorated stone statues, intricate carvings and tiles with dragon motifs.

The Zhaoling Mausoleum which is also known as the North Tomb is the burial place of HuangTaiji (1592-1643) the founder of the Qing Dynasty. Situated towards the north of the city, the North Tomb lies in the middle of a park. The tomb depicts an architectural style which is considered to be an amalgamation of Hun and Manchurian art which was prevalent during the early Qing period. Being the best preserved mausoleum and the largest among the imperial tombs in Northern China the Zhaoling Mauoleum is a popular place with tourists and locals. An exquisitely carved memorial archway that is at the centre outside the door can be considered the centrepiece of the attraction. Among the other interesting aspects of the Tomb the stone sculptures of lions, unicorns, elephants and horses attract a lot of attention from visitors.

The Fuling Mausoleum is located towards the east of Shenyang city, thus it’s also known as the East Tomb. The Mausoleum was designed and constructed to compliment the scenic beauty of the area which comprises the Huihe River. The Qing Emperor Nrachchi and Empress Yehenela are buried here surrounded by glazed dragons, ornamental columns, stone lions and archways. Built between 1629 and 1651 this unique necropolis covers an area of 194,800sq.m.

The Imperial Mausoleums of Shenyang provide a gateway to understand and observe the rich heritage of China and in particular the Qing Dynasty. As they depict the craftsmanship of the ancient inhabitants as well as the traditions of the Qing Empire the mausoleums are regarded as must visit sites for tourists.
