Xiangshan Bamboo Root carvings are also a unique and fascinating form of handicraft resulting in natural and soothing forms of animals and josses (Chinese gods).  Fanhuang bamboo sculptures are produced using special techniques derived from its namesake.  The core of the bamboo plant is used to engrave lively depictions that are then painstakingly moulded into vases, boxes and other decorative ornaments.

If visitors are after modern fare, the city's seaport roots have made it a major garment manufacturing hub.  Hence many good bargains are to be found on all varieties of clothing and brands.  Most of the modern shopping centres are congregated around the city's CBD in an area known as Tianyi Square.
