Exploring Manila
Corregidor

Corregidor is a small island of 5 sq km where great historic events took place. Strategically situated at the portal to Manila Bay, the tadpole shaped island is 48 km off the western coast of Manila. The advantageous location of the island made it a centre of great military importance, especially during the 2nd World War. Today, the island is a popular tourist destination as well as a historic monument to the battle of Corregidor, fought by the American and Filipino forces against the invading Japanese.

During Spanish rule the island was used as a customs office and prison as well as a guard post to warn the capital of approaching enemy vessels. At the dawn of the 20th Century, an American military base named Fort Mills was constructed on Corregidor. The isle was fortified by an intricate system of subterranean passages and emplacements most of which can be seen today. Despite the loss of Corregidor to the Japanese in 1942 it was regained by American forces in 1945.

The Pacific War Memorial was erected in 1968 by the American government in honour of the American and Filipino who fought in the 2nd World War. Buildings reduced to ruins during the hostilities have been preserved in the same state in remembrance of those who laid down their lives to save Philippines. Visitors can also see the Malinta Tunnel which was the final stronghold of the allies against the Japanese invaders. An audio-visual presentation is shown in the tunnel, unfolding the events that occurred on Corregidor. Filipino Heroes Memorial is another important building on the island, containing murals portraying the battles of Philippines from 15th century to date.

The historically important island of Coregidor is a popular tourist attraction in Manila and can be easily accessed by a guest of Makati Shangri-La Hotel due to its proximity to the isle.
