Identified as the most renowned and prominent landmark located in the heart of Jakarta is the impressive National monument, Monas. It stands an astounding 132 metres high and is topped with an imposing 35 kilograms of gold. This distinctive obelisk which is situated in Lapangan Monas is also referred to by locals as the Merdeka Square in Gambir, Lapangan Gambir, Tugu Monas, Lapangan Merdeka and Taman Monas.
Set beautifully amidst a well maintained square complete with lawns and fountains, Monas was also previously known as Sunda Kelapa. The charming Merdeka Palace is positioned on the northern side of the square. On the west side is the well-known National Museum, and on the east side visitors will find the sacred Istiqlal Mosque and Gambir railway station.
This significant national memento was built during an era of nationalism and therefore it honours the heroism of the then Indonesians who battled bravely. Even though construction work of this extraordinary national landmark commenced in1961 it was not concluded until 1975. Built on an 80 hectare land, Monas was officially open for public viewing on July 12th 1975. This remarkable monument was designed by the professional architect duo Soedarsono and F. Silaban. During the process they received valuable impetus and guidance by Ir. Rooseno.
Monas Jakarta, which is known as the symbol of the city is home to a couple of acclaimed museums such as the Freedom Hall that offers some important information on the efforts of achieving independence in Indonesia.
