Exploring Harbin
Church of St. Sophia

Renowned as the Far East’s largest Eastern Orthodox Church, St. Sophia Church located in Harbin is a protected site listed as a Key Cultural Relic. This impressive church is 53.3 metres in height and covers an area of 721 square metres. Few months after the church was named a Key Cultural Relic in 1996, it was repaired and transformed to the Harbin Art Gallery by the Harbin City government. Church of St. Sophia is a significant landmark and plays a vital role in the tourism industry of Harbin.

Built according to Byzantine style, this unique place of worship was built following the Boxer revolution that took place between 1899 and 1901. It was constructed entirely out of timber by the Russian’s in March, 1907. Four years after the initial construction the Russian’s rebuilt the church with masonry and timber. They started yet another reconstruction phase on September 23rd, 1923 which was completed in November 1932. Following this extensive restoration that took nearly nine years it was summoned a monumental work of art.

St. Sophia means God's wisdom and most locals believe that the church was made by the hands of God due to its grand and glorious features.   Although the church underwent many renovations, its original shape has been preserved. This outstanding four storey cathedral can be entered from each side. Until the 1960’s the church housed a magnificent bell tower with 7 bells. The dexterously painted Russian murals that adorn the arched walls of the church are also one of its exclusive features.   However since most of its original frescos were destroyed with time, in 1997 the Harbin government restored the church by adding new murals, replaced its removed crosses and lamps and even returned the bell tower. With all this uplifting the church was brought back to its original splendour.

Today, travellers can conveniently board in at a nearby hotel in Harbin and explore this magnificent architectural masterpiece. Furthermore, the majestic Church of St. Sophia lies in close proximity to the luxuriant Shangri La Hotel Harbin which offers comfy accommodation and impeccable service.
