Exploring Chengdu
Wenshu Temple

Wenshu Temple is one of the attractions that should not be missed in Chengdu, resting towards the northwest of the city. It is the largest Buddhist temple in Chengdu which was built during Tang Dynasty (618 – 907 A.D.), dedicated to Manjusri Bodhisatva (Wenshu Pusa), who was an enlightened being venerated by the locals for his unparalleled wisdom.

Curled roofs, columns in crimson shades and walls in teak hues add a touch of traditional beauty and charm to the temple’s facade, where every inch of its exterior is filled with elaborately chiselled motifs. Signs inscribed in golden Kanji letters droop from architraves and columns. The temple is flanked by inviting gardens, and the heart of its courtyard exudes a column of smoke dipped in the aromas of the burning incense sticks and paper. This is where scores of devotees gather to burn sacrificial paper money as well as joss-sticks to invoke blessings in return.

The interior of the temple is another key attraction, housing an impressive repository with more than 400 Buddha statuaries made of wood, clay, and iron as well as stone, dating back to the ancient times. Among its precious relics one can find the skull of Xuanzang - a popular Chinese Buddhist monk from Tang Dynasty, Japanese gold scripture cylinder, Indian pattra-leaf with Sanskrit incantations, Burmese white-jade Buddha statue and ancient Chinese calligraphy in addition to the renowned Mahayana scripture – Diamond Sutra.

Whilst being immersed in the serene scenic environ, visitors can savour succulent vegetarian dishes and the best Chinese tea served at the spacious restaurant and its next door tea house for a reasonable rate. Visitors can conveniently explore attractions in Chengdu including Wenshu Temple from a nearby hotel such as Shangri-La Hotel Chengdu, and capture a glimpse into the rich history and culture of China.
