Exploring Beijing
Tiananmen Square is the largest inner-city square in the world and can hold up to a million people. Built in 1958 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic, the Square and its adjacent buildings soon became symbolic of the socialist state. The Chairman Mao Mausoleum was erected within the Square to contain the leader’s body following his death in 1976.
