Exploring Beijing
Summer Palace

Renowned as one of the world’s most famous classical gardens, the Summer Palace is well worth a visit for its breathtaking landscape, architectural delights and enchanting history. This amazing Chinese garden was declared by UNESCO as a world heritage site in 1998, and was also named a Key Cultural Relics Protection Site of China. Located approximately 15 kilometers from central Beijing, tourists and locals stream into the Summer Palace to enjoy its natural and historical beauty.

Popularly known among the Chinese as Yihe Yuan which means Garden of Restful Peace, the Summer Palace first came into existence during the Jin Dynasty between the late 1100’s to the early 1200’s. As time passed, the site evolved to become a garden where royalty came for rest and entertainment purposes. Visitors are still able to see the extravagant buildings that were once used by the royal figures who frequented the site and other historical remnants. Lovely pavilions, airy courtyards, tall towers and picturesque bridges are among the structures that are to be explored at the gardens.

Much of the 300 hectare land of the Summer Palace includes the gentle slopes of Longevity Hill and the land around the Kunming Lake in Beijing. The gardens can be divided into 4 main areas, making it easier for exploration. These four are the Court section, the Front Hill Section, the Front Lake section, and the Rear Hill and Lake section. The Court section features the main buildings of the palace. The highlights of the palace include the Garden of Harmony and Virtue, the Hall of Jade Ripples and the Hall of Longevity and Benevolence. The Front Hill section of Summer Palace is the most breathtaking to behold as it has a distinct layout of important buildings that begin from the lakeside all the way up to the top of the hill. Buildings to be visited here include the Hall of Dispelling Clouds, the Hall of Moral Glory and the Hall of the Sea of Wisdom.

Visitors wishing to mainly take in Summer Palace’s natural beauty should visit the Front Lake Section, and the Rear Hill and Lake section. The Front Lake section provides an amazing view overlooking the Kunming Lake. At this area, popular sites to visit include Nanhu Island, the Seventeen Arch Bridge and unique statues such as that of a Bronze Ox and a Marble Boat. The Rear Hill and Lake section has a touch of natural elegance and is also suited for relaxation and tranquillity. With a dense growth of greenery and winding paths, this area has fewer constructions to explore.
