Exploring Beijing
Temple of Heaven

Built in 1420 for emperors to worship heaven, Temple of Heaven is considered as China’s largest complex of sacrificial buildings. Located in Beijing in Xuanwu district, this Taoist building complex was frequently visited by emperors of Ming and Qing dynasties for annual ceremonies of prosperous harvest. In the beginning the temple was only for the use of the royalty, though now it is a cultural attraction valued by both local and foreign tourists.

Temple of Heaven was declared a world heritage site in 1998 with a description as an epitome of the evolution of one of the world’s greatest civilizations. With a large ground covering the park land, this cultural heritage consists of 3 main constructions named as The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, The Imperial Vault of Heaven, and The Circular Mound Altar. The former of the 3 constructions is a wooden triple gabled circular building while the latter is an empty circular platform with three levels of marble stones. The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests boasts of twelve pillars in the middle and another twelve in the outside which are symbolic of the traditional solar system. The Imperial Vault of Heaven on the other hand includes a circular wall of polished bricks which is referred to as the echo wall.

Most unique and special feature in the temple is that each building consists of a roof that has special dark blue tiles which represent the heaven. The circular shape of the buildings was designed according to people’s imagination of heaven. Local and foreign tourists who value Chinese culture and heritage have the privilege of visiting the Temple of Heaven in Beijing.

Visitors can plan a memorable holiday by selecting a hotel that is located close by to this attraction. One such hotel in Embassy district in Beijing is Traders Hotel, Beijing which provides comfort and value for leisure and business travelers.
