Built in 1420 for emperors to worship heaven, Temple of Heaven is considered as China’s largest complex of sacrificial buildings. Located in Beijing in Xuanwu district, this Taoist building complex was frequently visited by emperors of Ming and Qing dynasties for annual ceremonies of prosperous harvest. In the beginning the temple was only for the use of the royalty, though now it is a cultural attraction valued by both local and foreign tourists.

The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests boasts of twelve pillars in the middle and another twelve in the outside which are symbolic of the traditional solar system. The Imperial Vault of Heaven on the other hand includes a circular wall of polished bricks which is referred to as the echo wall.

Most unique and special feature in the temple is that each building consists of a roof that has special dark blue tiles which represent the heaven. The circular shape of the buildings was designed according to people’s imagination of heaven.
