Exploring Beijing
Temple of Heaven

The symbolically constructed Temple of Heaven is a tour de force of classical Chinese architecture, manifesting the relationship between the mortal world and heaven. Erected in 1420 AD on 273 hectares, the stately complex is thrice as big as the Forbidden City, representing the far greater grandeur of the divine. The structure of the temple served as a prototype for many subsequent Chinese shrines. Its architectural magnificence and cultural importance was recognized by the UNESCO in declaring The Temple of Heaven as a world heritage site.

The sacred premises are encircled by an extensive wall. The northern section which is circular and higher than the southern section represents heaven while the square shaped lower section symbolizes earth, in keeping with the ancient Chinese geographical and religious beliefs. Three of the buildings stand out distinctly. “The Circular Mount Altar” which has three terraces of white marble was used by the emperor for a ceremonious thanksgiving each Winter Solstice, hoping for the continuation of prosperity. The magnificently constructed “Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest” reflects the central role played by agrarian success in pre-industrialized China. This Hall is also ingeniously formed to embody chronological markers commencing with the four seasons. “The Imperial Vault of Heaven” is remarkable in appearance, resembling a gold topped, blue umbrella from far.

The “Three Echo Stones” and the “Echo Wall” are renowned for their intriguing powers of echoing. A word articulated on the first stone echoes once while words spoken on the second and third stones produce two and three echoes. The”Echo Wall” has the fascinating ability of carrying over, even a whisper from the eastern end of the wall to the western.

Set amidst a beautiful pine forest in southern Beijing, the sacred complex is a gateway to understanding the ancient philosophy and grandeur of China. A stay at the Shangri-La Kerry Centre Hotel near Temple of Heaven, provides the visitor with a convenient and comprehensive experience of the nation’s rich heritage and exciting present.
