Exploring Beijing
Tiananmen Square

Occupying the very heart of Beijing, Tiananmen Square has the distinction of being the world’s largest metropolitan square. The 440,000 square metre quadrangle is capable of accommodating a crowd of 10,000,000.  Used in ancient times for the ceremonious declaration of who ascended the throne, today the Tiananmen Square is a popular gathering place for locals and tourists. The official raising of the national flag that takes place each dawn attracts a multitude of people, signifying the geographical and cultural centrality of the site.

The midpoint of the court is occupied by the “Monument to the People’s Heroes”, the largest monument in China. Built during the rule of Mao Zedong it commemorates those who contributed to modern Chinese development. The Tiananmen Square is surrounded by buildings of great importance and interest making a visit to the square an enriching experience.  To the north of the quadrangle is the magnificent Tiananmen Tower beneath which the clear Jinshui River flows. Beyond it is the Forbidden City. While the northern section is characterized by ancient history, “The Mao Zedong Memorial Hall”, the final resting place and museum of the Republic’s first Chairman is located in the south. Bordering the court on the east is the “National Museum of China”. It provides an extensive view of Chinese history and art through its vast collection of artifacts and literature. . The “Great Hall of the People”, where the National People’s Congress convenes, neighbours the square on the West.

The square is strewn with bright flowers and is a popular out door spot for relaxation. Its central location among historical, diplomatic and commercial centres makes a stay in hotels in Tiananmen Square a convenient and enjoyable experience.
