Situated about 185 kilometres from the city of Baotou, the charming Genghis Khan Mausoleum is the national gathering place to pay tribute to the great Mongolian hero, Genghis Khan also known as the khan of khans.

Mongolian tribes refer to Genghis Khan as the Powerful King who unified Mongolian tribes. It was in 1954 that the Mausoleum was built in respect of this great emperor. The Mongolian Hero’s remains however are not placed here. Although the Mausoleum is home to merely the clothes of Genghis Khan it is of enormous religious and historical value.

Genghis Khan Mausoleum is a magnificent complex that comprises mainly of three grand halls. Erected in the shape of Mongolian yurts, these three halls are connected with the use of broad corridors that depict frescos of the legendary life of Genghis Khan. The most important is the main hall which is placed in the centre of the compound. At the main hall visitors will find the impressive 13 feet marble statue of Genghis Khan. The west hall and the east hall are positioned on either sides of the Memorial hall. At the west hall visitors can discover the arms and ammunition used by Genghis Khan. The coffins of one of his wives and his fourth son are placed in the east hall. 

Four sacrifice ceremonies are held each year at this astounding 5.5 hectare mausoleum in order to commemorate and pay tribute to the great Mongolian hero. The grandest ceremony of them all is the one held on the 21st of March each year.
