Children of migrant families living in the outskirts of Beijing stand in constant
pressure to quit middle school to earn money. Through the hotel’s partnership with
the Kerry Group Kuok Foundation, our hotel colleagues launched the “Big Brother, Big Sister” programme to
mentor the children through continued
and familiar guidance, counselling and tutoring.
Activities such as Tree
Planting, Children’s
Day, Art Competitions
and Mid-Autumn
Celebrations helped foster trust and friendship between the children
and their mentors. The children have discovered their talents and interests,
and are now more confident about their future careers.
In June 2011, all the "heart" work paid off, as 61 children graduated
and will carry on to various high schools in Beijing. The friendship with them will
continue, but more will spur, as the next round of youngsters will come into
the programme.
