Looking beyond the Disability

Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou

In 2011, Shangri-La Suzhou set up its Embrace project and partnered with Suzhou Welfare House, a government supported orphanage. Since then, the project has helped two children with congenital cleft lips to successfully undergo corrective surgeries. The hotel also identified two talented children and provided them with special drawing training.

In 2013, the hotel began working with the Suzhou Jiayue Rehabilitation Center, a training centre designed for children with hearing and speech impairments. With the aim of improving their hearing abilities, the project included face to face oral training as well as sponsorship of audio phones at the centre.

Infrastructure Development

The hotel has arranged engineering colleagues to install wall protection pads at the Suzhou Jiayue Rehabilitation Center, as an effort to improve the safety aspects and reduce injuries to the children attending.

Training Together

Hotel volunteers visit the centre once a month to provide to speech training to the children. These activities give children the opportunity to practice their speaking and listening skills, which serves as preparation for the entry language tests at normal primary schools.

Latest News

Hotel volunteers acted as examiners in a mock entry language tests organised in March 2013. The result was that 12 of these children successfully passed the test held by Suzhou Education Bureau and Federation of the disabled in May 2013, and are now ready to join mainstream schools this upcoming school year.
