On the first day after the National Day Holiday in China, 45 volunteers from China World Hotel, Beijing happily arrived at “The Slow Fly Angle Organic Garden” in Shun Yi County, Beijing to help the residents of the Beijing Lizhi Rehabilitation Centre harvest sweet potatoes and corn.
BTV reported in its morning special news programme on 26 September 2012 that “The Slow Fly Angle Organic Garden,” the training base of the Beijing Lizhi Rehabilitation Centre for mentally challenged people, had a large quantity of sweet potatoes and corn that was still not harvested. The hotel management, on hearing the news, made a quick decision to offer a helping hand to the residents and teachers of the rehabilitation centre. Forty five hotel staff registered that day to volunteer to help harvest the sweet potatoes and corn.
On 8 October 2012, the 45 volunteers from the hotel worked together with the residents and teachers of the rehabilitation centre to harvest the sweet potatoes and corn on 10 acres of farmland. Because of their hard work, they managed to complete most of the farm work in just half a day. To assist the centre further, the hotel purchased the freshly picked sweet potatoes and other organic items for the hotel’s employee dining room.
The hotel plans to offer long-term consultancy services and farming assistance on green product planting, and to establish co-operative training programmes with the Beijing Lizhi Rehabilitation Centre. The products will be used in the China World Hotel, Beijing employee dining room.
“We are very grateful for the support given by China World Hotel’s management and hotel staff. We can feel the warm care of society and we will continue to try our best to provide a good training environment for mentally challenged students,” said Miss Feng Lu, the acting executive director of the Lizhi Rehabilitation Centre.
Mr. John Rice, the hotel’s area general manager, said, “Today is a very meaningful day. To help mentally challenged people at the Beijing Lizhi Rehabilitation Centre demonstrates the hotel’s continuous care under the corporate social responsibility umbrella of ‘embrace,’ which was established in 2009 and focuses on Shangri-La’s Caring People Project. China World Hotel strongly believes in investing in efforts to empower people. The Caring People Project aims to care for others today, build a beautiful tomorrow and achieve long lasting happiness. We will continue to reaffirm our commitment to the communities and make a contribution to meet our corporate social responsibility.”
