Speeding up a turtle’s safe journey
In line with our commitment to biodiversity conservation, the group launched Sanctuary, Shangri-La's Care for Nature Project.
At Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa, Penang, we have the Turtle Care Project which aims to create awareness on turtle conservation and increase the survival rate of turtle hatching. Onsite, the Eco Centre is a spacious edutainment venue where resort guests and visitors have the opportunity to learn about the conservation of turtle species and environmental protection through informative displays.
Turtle conservation efforts are supported by a variety of activities involving guests and local schoolchildren such as story-telling sessions, craft-making sessions using discarded hotel recyclables and outdoor games simulating turtle life cycles, where they learn about 'prey' and 'predator' and the threats that turtles face in the various stages of their life cycle. Through fun and educational learning sessions with Department of Fisheries, and environmental NGOs including Ecoteer and Reef Check Malaysia, children learn about the importance of turtle conservation, their role as individuals and how they can increase the survival rates of turtle hatchlings in Penang.
