Shangri-La Hotel, Guangzhou has been supporting the development of children at the Little Sun Special Children Recovery Centre for the last three years. The centre is for autistic and deaf children aged 3 to 7 years old. In 2011 efforts were concentrated on installing facilities through the upgrade of the fire safety system, fans, classrooms and exercise rooms.
In 2012, focus shifted towards teacher training classes and funding for students from low-income backgrounds to ensure they can continue their education at the recovery centre. Employees visit twice a month to lend support in educational activities and help the children's social development.
Special Education Assistance
As of today, 20 teachers have been sent to professional development courses for further education enhancement. Special education professionals and doctors were invited by the hotel to conduct psychological training for the parents and teachers.
The hotel is dedicated to helping families with financial difficulties by fully supporting their children with autism by helping them to continue their studies and recovery treatment. The drop-out rate at Little Sun has reduced by 66% over the last three years.
The hotel has established a strong volunteer team made up of more than 100 staff members. Besides festive visitations, volunteers join classes twice a month and accompany these children to receive treatments.
Shangri-La Hotel, Guangzhou strengthens its cooperation with Johnson Diversey via the EMBRACE project. Late last year, Johnson Diversey helped to install facilities and products in the centre's washrooms and kitchen that enhanced the importance of hygiene. Moreover, they provided training for the children, parents and teachers on the importance of proper personal and food hygiene.
In December 2012, over 280 corporate clients, business partners and media supporters raised a significant amount of funds during Shangri-La Hotel, Guangzhou's Annual Gala Dinner. The money was used to fund a surgery that has now enabled a little girl to hear her parent's voices, which she had never heard before.
