Community
Since 1985, Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur has supported hundreds of critically ill children and raised over MYR 4 million through this charity project. Additional projects under this programme include adopting and refurbishing the Paediatric Wing of Kuala Lumpur General Hospital, financially supporting and renovating the Serdang and Sejahtera Seri Setia Old Folks Homes and donating to flood victims and orphanages.

“Embrace the Gift of Life” Buka Puasa Charity Dinner 

Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, held its “Embrace the Gift of Life” Buka Puasa Charity Dinner on 30 May 2019, in conjunction with Embrace the Gift of Life Charity Project, where a total of MYR 394,823 was donated to aid 11 children suffering from severe heart ailments to undergo life-saving surgeries.

The event was graced by Mr. Gonzalo Duarte Silva, the General Manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, who presented cheques to the parents of the children together with Ms. Neena Dewi, Director of Communications of Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. The funds raised are paid directly to the hospital so that the children can undergo operations without delay. Some of the children have already gone for their operations and are recovering well.

Of the 120 guests who attended, 2 charity homes - Rumah Anak Yatim Qaseh Ibu and Tasputra Perkim – were also invited to enjoy a scrumptious buffet meal. These organizations each received a donation of MYR 5,000 from the hotel.

The Christmas Charity Tree
The Christmas Charity Tree theme for 2018 is “The Enchanting Tree of Hope”. The tree is made of 6 different figurines stacked on 10 tiers, reaching a height of 18 feet. 

The colourful handmade sugar paste figurines are for a minimum donation of MYR 1,000, to raise funds for children with severe heart ailments and need immediate surgery. The donors’ names or company logos will be displayed on the charity tree. There are also 5 limited edition designs for donors to sponsor, at MYR 3,000. Those wishing to just donate without an ornament can also contact the hotel directly.

Environment
Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur have been actively reducing single plastic use with the introduction of reusable non-woven shopping bag and paper straws at Lemon Garden 2Go in conjunction with International Plastic Bag Free Day. Other dining outlets within the hotel have now adopt biodegradable takeaway packages and cutleries, paper straws and paper cups to reduce environmental impact on Mother Nature.

In 2018, Lemon Garden 2Go also introduced wild Royal and Tualang Honey by Dorsata Honey to support brands that harvest raw honey and maintain sustainable practices to protect the health of honey bees. Staying in line with Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts’ sustainable food initiative, Rooted in Nature, the hotel’s all day dining outlet Lemon Garden has been serving a wide variety of dishes using sustainably farmed fish. With the aim to serve 75% more sustainably sourced food across its hotel chain by 2020, Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur is proud to help the group move closer towards achieving that goal.

Health and Safety
Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur have been taking calculative measures to ensure high standards of health and safety are maintained for all stakeholders. Food safety systems, hygiene and sanitation standards are constantly reviewed and security and safety initiatives are adapted and implemented by the hotel based on local and global situations.
