SMK Sri Nangka is a local government school located 15 minutes from Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort. The majority of the school’s student body is made up of children from the Bajau community, from the surrounding villages in the Tuaran district of Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia.
Apart from scholarships, various educational support, improvement of facilities and health support, the resort also provides skills training for sustainable futures. In addition to this project, the resort also recently began supporting another school, SMK Tamparuli (Special Education), located 20 minutes from the resort. This school particularly cares for those who are differently-abled.
“A Meal a Day”
“A Meal a Day” programme was launched and established to provide meals to students from underprivileged, single parent and low income family backgrounds. Twenty students of SMK Sri Nangka were selected for this program.
Monthly Colleague Engagement Activities
Senior hotel colleagues kicked off the partnership with a familiarisation visit to SMK Tamparuli (Special Education). Thereon, monthly colleagues engagement activities occur, including a Landscaping Techniques workshop and training with the Hygiene and Sanitation Department to organise a Health Seminar in light of World Health Day.
Bursary Awards for Improved Students - Recently, 20 Bursary Awards, in the form of gift vouchers, were given to students whom have achieved the most improvement in the first half of the school year. The gift voucher enables the students to purchase books and stationery.
Special Education at SMK Tamparuli - A team of colleagues from the Housekeeping and Front Office departments organised a one-hour training session at SMK Tamparuli’s Special Education class. The training instilled basic bed-making skills and knowledge, including bed decoration and floor sweeping. Positive involvement by all students and teachers made it a grand success.
