Addu, in fact, boasts the largest population in Maldives outside the capital city of Malé, but tourism development of this southern atoll was minimal in the past. Since its construction, Shangri-La's Villingili Resort & Spa, Maldives has been able to provide assistance to local community initiatives and opportunities to local industry.
Local Farmer’s Co-operative
Local farmers of fruits and vegetables supply the Resort with fresh produce on a weekly basis. The resort’s culinary and purchasing teams have been instrumental in developing a successful business relationship with the farmers, which saw the formation of a co-operative society in order to better coordinate their production.
School Leaver’s Apprenticeship Programme
As the premier luxury hospitality establishment in Addu, the resort is in a unique position to provide experience to aspiring young hoteliers. Up to nine young Adduans at a time receive placement in our apprenticeship programme, wherein they receive 18 months of on-the-job training and a Shangri-La certificate in hospitality.
In December 2012, we received our first intake of Apprentices. School-leavers recommended by the local City Council joined us for what promises to be a stimulating introduction to the hospitality industry. We wish them a great time ahead!
In December 2012, Shangri-La Hotel, Maldives' Sous Chef Padmanabhan Murari held a cooking demonstration on Meedhoo to showcase dishes using fruits and vegetables grown by the island’s farmers. This and future demonstrations will hopefully increase the popularity of these “non-traditional” foods in local households, allowing the farmers to expand their market base.
We offer various ways for our guests to experience different aspects of the Addu communities. As part of our work with the Farmer’s Co-operative, we undertake tours of the farms on Meedhoo, with some of the proceeds going to the co-operative for use in farming development.
