Explore and celebrate the diversity of Canadian landscapes, captured on film through the eyes of renowned master photographer Ron Smid in his latest collection Canada: The Light on Our Land. From 17 March to 15 April 2014, guests can view the collection in Xi Shi Lounge and enjoy familiar Canadian flavours with the Artist in Residence Afternoon Tea. Smid will be in the lounge on Saturdays and Sundays, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., to speak about the collection, share tales from his journeys across Canada's wilderness, and answer questions about his unique and rare photography process.
A passionate photographic purist, Smid uses a vintage 1936 large format wooden camera to capture the elusive light on analog film, without the use of digital technology. Over the past two decades he has travelled more than a quarter of a million miles to document the geographic diversity of Canada in all its beauty. From a fiery Pacific sunrise on Vancouver Island to a final twilight crescendo of surf through The Arc in Newfoundland, this exhibit showcases the finest collection of Canadian landscape images. Smid’s work is found in private and corporate collections around the world, and is sold exclusively through the Ron Smid Collection gallery located in the Upper Village in Whistler, B.C.
Inspired by classic Canadian cuisine from coast to coast, the Artist in Residence Afternoon Tea includes savoury items such as: BC smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels; Montreal smoked meat with sauerkraut and Dijon mustard on rye bread; and Nova Scotia lobster salad on toasted brioche. Desserts include: baked blueberry yogurt; glazed pecan butter tarts; cinnamon dusted doughnuts with maple cream; and the legendary Vancouver Island staple, the Nanaimo Bar. The Artist in Residence Afternoon Tea will be available daily from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for CAD$38 per person.
Xi Shi Lounge, located at Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver is open Monday through Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m, and open until 2:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. The lounge is accessible through the hotel or via its direct entrance on Alberni Street.
