Rangoli

rangoli picture

Rangoli is an ancient ephemeral art form practiced throughout India and is also known as alpana, aripoma, or kolam. It is a timeless tradition and forms an essential part of festive celebrations in India and is an important aspect of Diwali, the festival of lights. The Sanskrit term was coined from the word ‘rang’ meaning color and ‘avalli’ meaning row.

The ancient symbols have been passed down through the ages, from one generation to the next, keeping both the art form and the tradition alive.

Designs are drawn on the ground, usually with chalk or colored powder and embellished with sand, rice, lentils, candles or flower petals during the Hindu festivals. The fine powder is held pinched between the thumb and the index finger and sprinkled delicately by maneuvering the hand skillfully to draw lines. When the powder is released more freely, a layered color is filled in.

Our In-house florist Prakash Negi along with his talented team has designed this wonderful piece of art with enormous efforts andcreativity. The rice were soaked in organic colors like orange, blue, yellow, red and green, then kept to dry over a period 10 days before they could be used for the Rangoli. It took close to six hours to complete this intricate design made from rice.

During Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, Rangolis are bedecked with oil lamps or diyas and bright patterns are drawn to welcome the Goddess of wealth, Lakshmi to enter and bring with her positivity and prosperity.

Rangoli designs always look complicated. The negativity that is in the air gets entangled in the complexity of the Rangoli design and fails to enter the house. Hence Rangolis absorb evil and prevent negativity from harming us. They also remind us to keep thinking positively, so that we can make our lives prosperous.”

Hence, the Rangoli is not only drawn to welcome Goddess Lakshmi, but is also looked upon as a symbol of extending a warm welcome to our guests. According to traditional customs and beliefs in India, a guest is always considered equivalent to God, ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’, Rangoli is an epitome of this concept.

On this auspicious festival, may the glow of joy, prosperity and happiness illuminate you life. Happy Diwali.
