Abu Dhabi, 17 March 2014 – Reaffirming their commitment to corporate social responsibility, Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi and Traders Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi implemented a green technology using coffee grounds as natural insecticide and fertiliser for both hotels’ foliage.
The food and beverage team, in collaboration with the engineering team, initiated this green effort in making use of the food waste to minimise environmental impact on the course of the hotels’ business operations at the start of 2014, towing the line of Shangri–La Hotels and Resorts’ CSR vision and mission.
The procedure includes collection of the used coffee grounds from the hotels’ restaurants to a dumping area on a daily basis. The hotels have collected nearly 600 kilograms in January and 500 kilograms in February, tallying 43 sacks of compost fertiliser.
“Utilising used coffee grounds as natural insecticide and fertiliser is Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi and Traders Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi’s most recent environmental endeavour to reaffirm our corporate social responsibility,” said General Manager Arbind K. Shrestha. “We trust this initiative will not only benefit our properties in terms of sustainability, but will also inspire other establishments and even individuals to do the same, thus creating synergetic effort to uphold our environment.”
