18 June 2014
On 18 June 2014, Traders Upper East Hotel, Beijing invited 20 WeChat fans and their friends for some cooking lessons by Sous Chef Tim Yang at Wu Li Xiang Restaurant as the restaurant launched its new dim sum menu. The success of the cooking class earned praise from all participants, who learned to cook Dim Sum-Shrimp Dumpling and Glutinous Rice with Coconut.
Twenty fans dressed in chef’s uniforms started the class with the Shangri-La Food Safety Management System’s (SFSMS) six-step hand washing method. As a HACCP-certified hotel, the hotel strictly implements every cooking procedure and standards. Pastry Sous Chef Tim Yang taught the class to make Cantonese Dim Sum-Shrimp Dumpling and Glutinous Rice with Coconut.
Shrimp Dumpling is a must when it comes to Cantonese dim sum. It is not an easy dish to make, whether creating the transparent dumpling skin or the Q Bouncing filling. The fans learned carefully and step by step to knead the dough, press the dumpling skins, mix the filling, wrap up and pinch the dumpling pleats. They were all very excited and felt great honour when the crescent-shaped shrimp dumplings lay in the bamboo steamer labelled with their names and especially when the dumplings were steamed out and uncovered in front of each maker.
Later, the fans made Glutinous Rice with Coconut, a dessert snack. They were also very excited to wrap their own product to bring home as a give-away and share with their beloveds.
While the participants enjoyed cocktails during the cooking class, Traders Upper East Hotel, Beijing presented them 10 lucky draw gifts: Lobster Buffet Dinner for Two Persons, Monk Jumps over the Wall and Sea Cucumber Set Menu for Two Persons, All-You-Can-Eat Dim Sum Weekend for the Family and the most surprising top prize, a complimentary room voucher valid at any Shangri-La sister hotel in a tourist city.
In addition, each participant received a cooking certificate for successfully completing the dim sum cooking class. The class ended with all the fans holding their amazing lucky vouchers, cook books, certificates, a memorable photo of the cooking class and their own product take-aways.
Thanks to the support of its fans, Traders Upper East Hotel, Beijing will hold a series of cooking classes on a monthly basis in the future. Those who missed the first session should not be disappointed as they can still invite 10 friends to follow the hotel’s official We Chat ID for a chance to participate in the next cooking class.
